Residents of three villages evacuated by a wildfire near Veguellina, in the Bierzo municipality of Villafranca del Bierzo, have been allowed to return home after the blaze was downgraded from level 2 to level 1 on the Potential Severity Index.
The three communities, Moreda, San Pedro de Olleros, and Prado de Paradiña, had been evacuated for three days before authorities cleared their return.
Eduardo Diego, the regional delegate of the Junta in León, announced the decision following a meeting of the Integrated Operational Coordination Centre. He said firefighting crews had worked throughout the day on the northern flank of the fire, where aerial units and machinery helped consolidate a firebreak and prevent the blaze from threatening Moreda.
Diego noted that one complex spot north of Veguellina remains a concern, though it is well contained and crews will continue working on it to prevent any flare-up.
The Military Emergency Unit completed its operation and was stood down. International reinforcements are stepping in, with German teams joining during the day and a convoy from Serbia expected overnight.
Diego highlighted coordination among all administrations involved, including Infocal crews, state resources, and international teams. Despite the improved situation, crews will maintain continuous surveillance of the entire perimeter.
