“Portrait of a Man as the God of Mars” made in 1620 for over 20 years belonged to the private collection of American art lovers Mark Fisch and Rachel Davidson. Unfortunately, the couple decided to divorce, and with it they decided to sell the works that were part of their joint property.
Not only was the most valuable painting by a Flemish Baroque painter up for auction, but also other works by many different artists. Last month, the couple cashed in as many as ten masterpieces, including “The head of St. John the Baptist given to Salome.”

In 2000, a Rubens painting was worth as much as $8.2 million. Although the work belonged to private art collectors for two decades, it ended up in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it could be admired by visitors. With the decision to divorce, however, the couple decided to sell off their joint collection and thus “Portrait of a Man as the God of Mars” went to the Sotheby’s auction, where it will be auctioned in a few days.
It is estimated that the current value of the work is approx. USD 30 million, which translates to approx. PLN 135 million. According to experts, one of the museums will probably become the new painting, but it is possible that a private collector will decide to buy it again.
