Osiptel: which operator won more mobile lines for portability in February?

The Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel) reported that, last February, a total of 452,554 mobile lines changed their operating company in the country, which represents a recovery of 47%, compared to the portability achieved in the same month in 2021.

The result also meant a slight drop of 1.5% with respect to the number of mobile lines that changed operators in January, after a 0.9% drop in the portability of the prepaid segment and 1.8% in the postpaid segment.

Thus, porting in the postpaid segment totaled 296,922 mobile lines, equivalent to 65.6% of the total reported in the second month of the year. Likewise, porting in the prepaid segment corresponded to 155,632 mobile lines, which represented the remaining 34.4%.

How did the operators do?

Similar to January, the operating companies Entel and Claro were the only ones with a positive net balance (the difference between mobile lines gained and lost) of 24,891 and 21,684 mobile lines covered, respectively. For the first time since June 2020, Entel obtained the highest monthly amount of net lines won in the mobile market.

Meanwhile, the companies Movistar and Bitel recorded a negative net result, with 24,823 and 20,822 mobile lines lost each, in the portability exercise. For the first time since September 2020, Movistar obtained the largest negative net balance in the mobile market in the monthly portability exercise. For their part, the virtual mobile operators (MVNO) Flash and Guinea Mobile registered negative net results of 598 and 332 mobile lines, respectively.

On the other hand, fixed telephone portability, in the last two years, reached a new maximum in February, when 3,698 lines were reported that changed operators, a figure only surpassed in June 2021, when 4,244 ported fixed lines were registered. The result of the second month of the year meant multiplying 2.7 times what was obtained in January, when 1,333 fixed lines were ported.

The company Of course achieved a positive net balance of 1,071 fixed lines, the same as Optical Networks and Century Link, with 142 and 1 fixed lines, respectively. For its part, Movistar had a negative net balance of 1,268 fixed lines lost, which accumulates 12 months of a balance with more lines lost.
