Daniel Salaverry will assume the reins of Perupetro

Yesterday, the Government appointed former Congressman Daniel Salaverry as president of Perupetro. The supreme resolution bears the signatures of President Pedro Castillo and the head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), Eduardo González Toro.

This entity, according to its creation law (law 26225), is in charge of promoting, negotiating, signing and supervising hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation contracts.

Likewise, Perupetro is the entity in charge of negotiating and renegotiating contracts in the hydrocarbon sector, such as the Camisea project, which is one of President Castillo’s flagship commitments.

Comptroller will investigate

As previously described, Salaverry’s appointment to head of the state agency raised questions about his suitability to occupy the position.

Gustavo Navarro, managing partner in Peru of Gas Energy Latin America, specified that the Perupetro Organization and Functions Law specifies that the members of the board of directors must be people with recognized technical and professional capacity in the matter to be performed, which would not be aligned with Salaverry’s profile.

Precisely, before this and at the request of the congressman Edward Malaga, the Comptroller General of the Republic reported that it will accredit a control team that verifies compliance with the requirements established by law for the appointment of the president of Perupetro.

:

The Republic was able to know that today the Board of Spokespersons of Congress This week’s plenary session would schedule the opinion of bill 297 – approved unanimously by the Energy and Mines Commission – which, precisely, raises the bar for the members of the Perupetro board of directors, having to prove experience “in functions related to the activities of exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons” as a precondition.

Salaverry’s appointment came a few hours after holding a meeting with the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, this last Saturday, January 8, 2022.

The data

Consequence. The congressman Diego Bazan announced that it will promote a motion of interpellation to the head of Minem, since Salaverry’s appointment does not adhere to law 26225.
