First a word of introduction. In January 2019, Fiorentina bought Szymon Żurkowski from Górnik Zabrze for EUR 4.5 million. The midfielder was automatically loaned back to the Polish club to prepare for a change of league within six months. However, this was not enough to compete for a place in the Viola squad in the 2019/20 season, so in the winter of 2020 Żurkowski was loaned to Empoli.
In a smaller club, Żurkowski quickly found himself. In the previous season, he was a key player for Empoli, which finished the season in 14th place, and the Pole scored as many as six goals and recorded three assists.
In the summer, he returned to Fiorentina, but due to the high competition Żurkowski played only 30 minutes this season in the colors of “Viola”. To make matters worse, he did not impress in pre-World Cup sparring, so he did not play a single minute in Qatar. In the winter, however, he managed to change the club. He was loaned to Spezia where he managed to play a few minutes against Torino (1-0). But that’s the end of it for now.
Żurkowski’s injury and praise for Wiśniewski
– Żurkowski got injured. It lasts 20 days. Nzola, Ekdal and Bastoni will also be unavailable – said Luca Gotti, who replaced Jakub Kiwior who was sold to Arsenal.
– I saw a few matches of Venezia, so I got to know Wiśniewski’s characteristics. He is a very organized defender, but he has a completely different style than Kiwior. But I liked it when I saw it. I hope he will contribute to Spezia,” Gotti said.
On Friday, Spezia will play Bologna in the 20th round of Serie A.
