Dominican Film Gut Feelings to Premiere at Tallinn Festival

Dominican director Jose Maria Cabral's new feature film Gut Feelings has been selected for the Official Competition of the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, where it will make its world premiere.

The film, titled Come Mierda in Spanish and produced by Lantica Studios, is one of 12 world premieres selected from 15 countries to compete for the festival's top honors.

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, widely known by its Estonian acronym POFF, is an A-category festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, also known as FIAPF. Based in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, the annual event ranks among the premier cinema gatherings in Europe.

FIAPF regulates competitive film festivals globally, granting A-category accreditation to a limited number of major international events. These include the Cannes Film Festival in France, the Venice International Film Festival in Italy, and the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany.

Satire and dark comedy

Gut Feelings focuses on an upper-class family struggling to keep their sick daughter, Isabella, alive. She is placed under a strict dietary regime controlled by her mother, Veronica, who is played by Dominican actress Cindy Galan.

Isabella's father, Raul, a biotechnologist, searches for alternative scientific solutions to treat his daughter's condition. When he identifies a potential answer, the household briefly recovers hope, but growing obsession and internal conflict soon reshape relationships inside the home.

Cabral uses the domestic crisis as a satire addressing power, social inequality, and class divisions. The movie represents the director's first project in the dark comedy genre, using humor to explore severe domestic themes.

Industry acclaim

American trade publication Variety included Gut Feelings among the most anticipated entries in the Official Competition, noting that the movie is Cabral's first entry into black comedy. Entertainment news outlet The Hollywood Reporter also highlighted the feature, drawing attention to its distinct premise.

Cabral is a filmmaker from Santo Domingo who has represented the Dominican Republic three times in the competition for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. His previous submissions to the Oscars include the features Jaque Mate and Woodpeckers, which was released domestically as Pajaros Carpinteros.

The Academy Award for Best International Feature Film is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length film produced outside the United States. Each country selects a single film each year to represent its national cinema.

Dominican film milestone

Lantica Studios is a media production company headquartered in the Dominican Republic that operates studio space and provides production infrastructure for local and international motion pictures. The Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking Caribbean nation located on the island of Hispaniola.

The selection at POFF marks a new milestone for Dominican film production, giving the country's movie industry a presence at a top European festival. The screening in Tallinn will provide the picture with its first opportunity to meet international audiences and film reviewers in Estonia.
