Universal Pictures confirmed on Sunday that Christopher Nolan's epic film The Odyssey has grossed $1.104 billion worldwide in its first month in theaters. The movie premiered on July 17 and is now the highest-grossing release of the director's career.
The film surpassed Nolan's previous record holders, the Warner Bros. Batman movies The Dark Knight Rises from 2012, which grossed $1.085 billion, and The Dark Knight from 2008, which made $1.005 billion. Total worldwide earnings across all of Nolan's films have now passed $7 billion.
Through Sunday, The Odyssey earned $461.1 million at the American box office, placing second for the weekend behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The adaptation of Homer's ancient epic is the second highest-grossing R-rated film in America and globally, behind only the 2024 movie Deadpool & Wolverine.
Box Office Milestones and Imax Records
The Odyssey generated $289.3 million in Imax theaters worldwide, making it the most popular Imax release of all time. It is the first feature fiction film shot entirely with Imax film cameras.
The film is among five movies to pass $1 billion globally this year, joining The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Toy Story 5, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution at Universal Pictures, said Nolan has earned public trust by consistently delivering must-see cinema events while operating at the peak of his capabilities. Orr added that audiences are seeking advanced screenings and repeat viewings for the epic.
Veronica Kwan Vandenberg, president of international distribution at Universal Pictures International, said Nolan is uniquely suited to adapt Homer's ancient poem, calling it one of the most influential stories in the world. Vandenberg added that the global epic has moved viewers everywhere with its massive scale and vision.
