A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Chechnya after fatally shooting his elderly neighbor with a hunting rifle, according to the Investigative Committee of Russia.
The Investigative Directorate for the region provided details of the incident to Lenta.ru, a major Russian online news outlet based in Moscow. Authorities have subsequently opened a criminal case for murder under Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code.
The fatal shooting took place in Tsotsi-Yurt, a rural village located in the Kurchaloyevsky District. The district lies to the southeast of Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic. Chechnya is a mountainous region situated in the North Caucasus area of Southern Russia.
Investigators stated that the suspect fired several shots at his neighbor using a hunting weapon. The violence was the result of a pre-existing hostile relationship between the two men, according to the official inquiry.
The elderly victim sustained severe wounds during the attack. The regional directorate confirmed that the man received injuries that were incompatible with life.
Suspect placed in pre-trial custody
Law enforcement officers promptly detained the 35-year-old suspect following the village shooting. Investigators reported that the man has fully admitted his guilt regarding the committed crime.
The Investigative Committee of Russia serves as the primary federal investigating authority in the country. The agency operates directly under the Russian president and is tasked with handling major crimes. Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code addresses premeditated murder and carries substantial penal sentences for those convicted.
Following a formal request from the lead investigator handling the case, a preventive measure was chosen for the suspect. Authorities have placed him into pre-trial custody while the investigation continues.
Detectives are currently working to establish the exact circumstances of the crime in order to secure the necessary evidence base.
