A feature film adaptation of pop star Britney Spears's life and career is continuing to move forward, with screenwriter Elizabeth Meriwether confirming that the project remains active and that the timing is right for the movie.
Meriwether, best known as the creator of the television comedy series New Girl, stated that the biopic is currently in its initial phase. Speaking in an interview published by Vanity Fair on Monday, August 31, Meriwether explained that she was at the very start of the process of thinking about the film, adding that Spears's experiences took place during a unique era shaped by an intense media storm and evolving news platforms.
Adaptation of Bestselling Memoir
The upcoming biographical film will draw its source material from Spears's 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, which became a global bestseller upon release. The book details Spears's childhood, her sudden rise to fame, her personal relationships, her experiences with motherhood, her music career, and the legal conservatorship that controlled major aspects of her life for years.
Universal Pictures announced in August 2024 that it had acquired the film rights to the memoir. Director Jon M. Chu was selected to helm the adaptation, while Spears confirmed at the time that she was collaborating on the project with film producer Marc Platt.
Meriwether revealed that she has read the memoir and listened to its audiobook edition repeatedly. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on August 24, Meriwether praised the recording, which is narrated by actress Michelle Williams, calling it one of the finest audiobooks ever produced and comparing Williams's performance to an emotional monologue that broke her heart in multiple ways.
Career History and Legal Conservatorship
Spears first achieved international stardom as a teenager in the late 1990s. Her debut studio album, ...Baby One More Time, was released in 1999 and propelled her to global fame, with its title track and iconic schoolgirl-uniform music video becoming defining cultural elements of the era.
She followed that release with a series of hit albums, including Oops!... I Did It Again, Britney, In the Zone, Blackout, and Circus, while also making her feature film acting debut in the 2002 movie Crossroads.
Behind her commercial success, Spears's personal life grew increasingly complex. In 2008, she was placed under a legal conservatorship, a court-appointed arrangement that gave guardians control over major personal and financial decisions. The conservatorship remained in place for nearly 14 years until it was officially terminated in November 2021.
