The 54th Book Festival opens in Athens at Pedion tou Areos park on September 4, featuring 210 publishing houses across 285 stalls. Pedion tou Areos is one of the largest public parks in the Greek capital, hosting the annual cultural gathering as a free event for visitors of all ages.
Organisers said the 2026 festival programme includes more than 200 cultural events, ranging from live concerts and theatrical plays to interactive educational activities. The Book Publishers Association organises the event under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Region of Attica, and the Municipality of Athens.
Focus on sustainable development
This year the festival centres on the theme of sustainable development, framing books as architects of tomorrow. Organisers explained that the gathering is dedicated to building collective awareness and social responsibility toward the planet and future generations.
The festival takes inspiration from the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations. It highlights key issues including quality education, social equality, environmental protection, responsible consumption, cultural inclusion, and the sustainable growth of cities and communities.
Through this theme, organisers aim to promote universal values, sustainable habits, and the protection of natural resources. Additional support and auspices for the festival are provided by the Hellenic Foundation for Book and Culture and the Athens Chamber of Commerce.
The Culture, Sports and Youth Organisation of the Municipality of Athens, known as OPANDA, and the Collective Management Organisation for Literary Works, known as OSDEL, are also supporting the event.
Cultural activities and performances
The festival features a broad parallel programme developed alongside major cultural and social organisations. Highlights include a three-day showcase dedicated to first-time writers and creators, as well as a special presentation by the Greek Comics Academy.
Round table discussions will bring together representatives from several prominent bodies, including the Network for Children's Rights and the Greek section of IBBY, the International Board on Books for Young People. The European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation in Greece will also host discussions during the event.
Younger visitors can participate in children's workshops and interactive events held by the Panhellenic Cystic Fibrosis Association and the Floga association. Theatrical offerings include the children's play Alice in Fishland, produced by the Methexis theatre company, and a traditional Karagiozis shadow puppet performance presented by the Nikola Tziveleki Shadow Theatre.
Musical performances will form a key part of the schedule. The Greek Music Workshop of the Municipality of Athens will perform in concert, alongside a special musical performance titled With Screen Songs a Journey Through Time, featuring musicians Marios Strofalis and Eirini Toumpaki.
Festival schedule and visitor details
The festival runs from September 4 through September 20, 2026, with free admission throughout its two-week duration. An official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 7, 2026, starting at 20:00.
Stalls and event venues will open from Monday to Thursday between 18:00 and 22:30. On Friday and Saturday, operating hours extend from 18:00 to 23:00. On Sunday, the festival opens in two shifts, first from 10:30 to 15:00 and returning from 18:00 to 22:30.
