Plastic artist and musician Rui Cavalheiro, aged 52, was killed alongside his friend on Monday night in a collision on the IC8 in Ansião.
The crash involved a heavy goods truck and two passenger cars, leaving two people dead and four others injured, three of them seriously.
Cavalheiro and 55-year-old Sérgio Monteiro, known locally as Timex because he was the first person in the municipality to own a watch of that brand, both died at the scene. The two men were travelling in a car with two other friends, heading from their homes in the central Portuguese town of Ansião towards nearby Pombal.
The 24-year-old driver of the vehicle and a 40-year-old passenger both sustained severe injuries in the crash and remain in serious condition.
Fatal Collision near Nogueiros
The four friends were driving along the IC8 in the direction of Pombal when the crash occurred near the locality of Nogueiros. The IC8, or Itinerário Complementar 8, is a major trunk road connecting coastal and inland municipalities across central Portugal.
Emergency responders found that the impact was exceptionally violent. The car was crushed beneath the heavy goods transport truck, which was driving in the opposite direction.
The truck driver, who resides in the same local area, escaped without physical injuries and received medical assistance at the scene. According to local residents, the driver likely knew the victims involved in the collision.
Injuries in Second Vehicle
A second passenger vehicle, a light commercial van, was also caught in the crash. The van was carrying a couple from the area of Proença-a-Nova, a municipality situated further east in the Castelo Branco district.
The 72-year-old male driver of the van suffered serious injuries, while his 71-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries.
Community Shock and Road Safety Concerns
News of the fatal crash sent shockwaves through the local community. Several residents and acquaintances of the victims gathered near the scene as rescue operations and investigations by the Guarda Nacional Republicana, Portugal's national gendarmerie, were underway.
Local resident Eduarda Neves expressed deep shock, noting that all four men in the car were friends from the municipality of Ansião.
Neves criticized the dangerous driving conditions along that section of the IC8, stating that accidents happen on the stretch almost every week. She added that overtaking along the road is virtually impossible and that drivers frequently take risks, leading to tragic outcomes.
Tributes to Cultural Figure
Rui Cavalheiro was a well-known figure in the region for his active role in organizing and promoting cultural activities, both in his home town of Ansião and in the neighboring municipality of Pombal.
Pedro Pimpão, the mayor of Pombal, posted a message of dismay on social media following the premature death of his friend. Pimpão stated that Pombal and the surrounding region are left poorer without Cavalheiro's creative spirit.
The mayor recalled that Cavalheiro was constantly coming forward with new ideas, projects, provocations, and artistic concepts designed to make Pombal more creative, vibrant, and distinct.
GNR Traffic Unit Restructuring
The fatal crash comes as the Guarda Nacional Republicana undergoes structural changes to its traffic enforcement division. Lieutenant General Rui Veloso, Commander-General of the GNR, is implementing directives from Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves to reinstate the former Traffic Brigade.
As reported by Correio da Manhã on Tuesday, four traffic detachments have already been transferred to the National Traffic Unit as part of the operational restructuring.
Rising Road Fatality Toll in 2026
The incident in Ansião reflects a broader rise in road casualties across Portugal this year. According to official statistics up to August 31, 2026, a total of 318 people have died on Portuguese roads in 96,760 recorded accidents.
This represents an increase of eight fatalities compared to the same eight-month period in 2025. Across the country, 30,319 people were recorded as injured in traffic accidents between January and August 2026.
The district of Lisbon recorded the highest death toll in the nation with 45 fatalities during the period. The Porto district followed with 35 deaths, while the Leiria district, where Monday's fatal crash occurred, recorded 32 road deaths.
