An Ariane 6 rocket has successfully launched the Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2 weather satellite from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. The satellite, designated MTG-I2, is designed to enhance weather forecasting and climate tracking across Europe and Northern Africa.
The European Space Agency confirmed that mission VA270 lifted off on August 27 at 23:11 Moscow time. The mission marked the ninth launch for the Ariane 6 rocket and the first time the heavy vehicle successfully delivered a spacecraft directly into geostationary orbit.

According to the agency, the satellite was deployed into an orbit at an altitude of approximately 36,000 kilometers above the surface of the Earth. From this high-altitude vantage point, MTG-I2 will collect continuous meteorological data to support European weather prediction services.
Orbital positioning and satellite capabilities
Geostationary orbit keeps a satellite synchronized with the rotation of the Earth, allowing its instruments to observe the same region continuously. For meteorological satellites like MTG-I2, this stationary position provides real-time monitoring of atmospheric changes, cloud formations, and severe storm developments over designated areas.
The Kourou spaceport, also known as the Guiana Space Centre, is situated near the equator in French Guiana on the northeastern coast of South America. Its equatorial location provides launch vehicles with an orbital velocity boost from the rotation of the Earth, making it a key facility for European space missions heading to high orbits.
Ariane 6 flight history and program development
The August launch follows previous missions conducted by the Ariane 6 launch vehicle earlier in the year. In April, a heavy Ariane 6 rocket launched from the Kourou facility carrying 32 satellites into space for the Amazon Leo constellation network.
In the same month, Defense News reported that French aerospace company ArianeGroup was exploring options to manufacture ballistic missiles in Germany. ArianeGroup produces both the Ariane 6 commercial space launcher and the M51 submarine-launched ballistic missile used by the French military.
The Ariane 6 program was established by the European Space Agency to ensure independent European access to space, replacing the long-serving Ariane 5 rocket system with a versatile platform capable of carrying both commercial and scientific payloads.
