A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody in Amadora after using an electric scooter to run over a uniformed officer from the Public Security Police during a getaway from a store burglary.
The police officer and a shop owner were both injured in separate confrontations with the suspect and required hospital treatment before another police patrol intercepted and arrested him.
Commercial burglary in Amadora
The incident began at around 4:30 AM on Thursday when the suspect broke into a commercial establishment in Amadora. The owners of the store discovered the intruder inside the premises and attempted to intervene. The suspect assaulted one of the owners, leaving him injured, before fleeing the scene. The victim required treatment at a hospital for his injuries.
While escaping from the initial break-in, the 22-year-old left behind a backpack containing an identification document. At around 10:00 AM on the same day, the suspect returned to the commercial establishment in an effort to retrieve his left-behind belongings.
Scooter getaway and officer collision
The store owners recognized the suspect when he arrived back at the shop and immediately alerted the Public Security Police. Realizing that law enforcement had been called, the suspect attempted to escape on an electric scooter.
During his getaway on the scooter, the suspect ran over a uniformed police officer, causing injuries that also required the officer to be taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The escape was short-lived, as another police patrol operating nearby apprehended the suspect shortly after the collision. Authorities from the Public Security Police managed to recover a portion of the property stolen during the break-in.
Court appearance and legal detention
Following his arrest by the patrol, the suspect appeared before a court magistrate, who ordered him held in pre-trial detention pending further legal proceedings.
