The body of renowned British-Nepali alpinist Nirmal Purja was recovered Sunday on Pakistan's Broad Peak, four days after an avalanche killed him and three other expedition members on the 8,000-meter peak, the Pakistan Alpine Club announced.
Purja, 43, was among a group of roughly ten climbers making their way toward Camp III at 6,600 meters on the northern Pakistan mountain when the avalanche struck on July 30.
Rescue teams located Purja's body at approximately 5,700 meters on the slope. The Pakistan Alpine Club shared the news on social media, referring to Purja by his widely known nickname "Nims Dai" and describing Broad Peak as a mountain he loved that had taken him from them. The club's secretary general separately confirmed to AFP that the bodies of Purja and the three other expedition members had all been recovered.
Elite Expedition, the organization associated with Purja, issued a statement saying it was with immense sadness that it was confirming his death. The group said Purja had tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak, and added that it had also received confirmation that other members of the expedition had not survived.
Purja was globally recognized for his mountaineering achievements and was widely regarded as a star of high-altitude climbing.
