Greek actress Alexandra Palaiologou attended the public vigil for singer Giorgos Mazonakis, saying she could not believe he had died and describing the moment she stood over his coffin surrounded by thousands of mourners.

Palaiologou said her last goodbye to the singer, who was also her wedding sponsor, on the evening of Sunday, September 13, at the Holy Church of Agia Triada in Nikaia, where his body was lying in state for public tribute.

Instagram Post And Video

The actress shared images with her followers of the atmosphere outside the church, posting a video on her personal Instagram account. The footage showed the crowd that had gathered to say goodbye to Mazonakis, with his song "Me Lene Giorgo" playing in the background.

In the caption of her post, Palaiologou referred to the moment she stood in front of the artist's coffin and focused on how hard it was for her to accept his loss. She wrote that this was how she had wanted to say goodbye to him, at the great vigil, together with thousands of people and with immense love. She said she had stood over his coffin, that her head felt as though it would break, and that she could not believe he was gone, calling him her child, her creature, her angel.

Years Of Friendship

Palaiologou and Mazonakis had been friends for many years, a bond sealed in 2011 when the singer served as best man at her wedding to businessman Vangelis Mitrogiannis.

Thousands Pay Tribute

The public vigil at the Holy Church of Agia Triada in Nikaia has been under way since 8pm on Sunday, with the singer's body due to remain there until Monday morning. Thousands of people have come to the church to pay their respects to the popular singer, with many of those gathered singing favourite songs from his extensive body of work.

Death And Funeral

Giorgos Mazonakis died at the age of 54 on Wednesday, September 9, after suffering cardiac arrest at the private Stem Cell clinic. His funeral was scheduled for 1pm on Monday, September 14. The funeral service was to be held in the presence of the public, while the burial itself was planned to take place among close family at the Third Cemetery of Athens.
