Volkswagen has unveiled its new ID. ERA 8X hybrid crossover at the Chengdu Motor Show in China, introducing a five-meter SUV equipped with dual-chamber air suspension and a total driving range of more than 1,500 kilometres.
The five-seater vehicle features a series hybrid powertrain and traction battery options up to 65.2 kWh, with sales scheduled to begin in China in October.
German automaker Volkswagen developed the crossover for the Chinese market, showcasing the model in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan in southwest China.
The vehicle measures 5,020 mm long, 1,997 mm wide, and 1,750 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,970 mm. Similar in stature to the Toyota Highlander, the car is built exclusively as a five-seater to provide a spacious second row and a large boot.
The interior design closely matches Volkswagen's larger ID. ERA 9X crossover. The cabin features a two-spoke steering wheel alongside two 15.6-inch displays with 2.5K resolution.
Chassis hardware includes dual-chamber air suspension integrated with Volkswagen's Vehicle Motion Control (VMC) digital system. The control electronics analyze the road surface ahead, modifying suspension settings almost instantly before the wheels hit uneven terrain.
Powertrain options and range
The powertrain uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 143 horsepower, which operates solely as a generator to produce electricity. Vehicle drive is supplied by an electric motor producing 299 horsepower.
Buyers can select between two battery pack sizes. The base 51.1 kWh battery offers up to 275 km of pure electric driving and a total range exceeding 1,400 km. The larger 65.2 kWh battery increases electric range to 345 km and total range to over 1,500 km.
Volkswagen has prepared a wide range of options for the vehicle, including custom lighting setups, alternative bumpers and door handles, privacy glass, additional driver assistance systems, and expanded chassis and comfort settings. Official pricing will be announced closer to the sales launch in October.
