Ukrainian military forces repelled 198 combat engagements across front lines on September 29, according to an operational update from the General Staff.
The highest concentration of Russian infantry assaults took place across the eastern sector in Donetsk region, where Ukrainian defense forces repelled 20 attacks around Kostiantynivka and 14 attacks toward settlements in the Pokrovsk area.
In the Pokrovsk sector, Russian forces attempted to advance toward the settlements of Svitle, Krasnopollya, Novohryshyne, Kucheriv Yar, Serhiyivka, and Molodetske. Ukrainian command reported that two engagements in the area remained active when the update was issued.
Further north in the Sloviansk direction, Ukrainian troops halted four separate attempts by Russian forces to push forward near the settlements of Ozerne, Pyskunivka, and Mykolaivka, with one assault action continuing.
Along the Kostiantynivka axis, Ukrainian military units turned back 20 enemy assaults. The attacks were concentrated around the town of Kostiantynivka itself and directed toward the settlements of Oleksiyevo-Druzhkivka, Novoselivka, Rozkishne, Stepanivka, Toretske, Vilne, and Kucheriv Yar.
Northern Operations and Air Defense Updates
In northern operational sectors covering the North Sloboda and Kursk directions, Ukrainian military command recorded one assault action by Russian troops. Russian forces launched one air strike using four guided aerial bombs and executed 45 bombardments against Ukrainian positions and populated places, including four strikes using multiple launch rocket systems.
The Ukrainian Air Force separately reported that Russian military forces launched 112 drones across Ukraine during the day, with Ukrainian air defense units successfully neutralizing 95 of the incoming uncrewed aerial vehicles.
Across the South Sloboda direction, Russian units launched five attacks directed toward the settlements of Starytsya, Okhrimivka, Mala Vovcha, and Vilkhuvatka. The General Staff noted that one of those attacks remained ongoing.
The North Sloboda and South Sloboda operational sectors cover the border regions of Kharkiv and Sumy in northeastern Ukraine. Russia's Kursk region lies directly across the international border, where military forces have engaged in artillery duels, aerial bombardment, and localized infantry operations.
Lyman Sector and Counteroffensive Operations
In the Lyman sector, Ukrainian troops repelled seven Russian attacks near the settlements of Shiykivka, Novoselivka, Zarichne, Drobysheve, and Dibrova, where active battle remained ongoing.
Heavy combat around Lyman follows a significant counteroffensive operation codenamed Operation Vivaldi. In an assessment published on September 16, the Institute for the Study of War stated that the Ukrainian counteroffensive east and northeast of Lyman achieved an operationally important objective by disrupting Russian efforts to carry out a broad encirclement of Ukraine fortress belt in Donetsk region.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces issued their first official statement on September 15 regarding the months of fighting in northern Donetsk region. Commander of the Third Army Corps Andriy Biletsky publicly confirmed that Ukrainian forces had carried out an offensive operation in the area east and northeast of Lyman.
