Apartments across Ukraine could soon generate their own electricity using balcony solar panels as part of a national push toward distributed power production, according to DroneUA co-founder Valeriy Yakovenko.

Speaking to Ukrainian news outlet LIGA.net, Yakovenko said balcony generation is one of the primary methods being developed to help households generate power locally rather than relying solely on centralized supply networks.

He explained that each of DroneUA's 800,000 customers in Ukraine could potentially install additional solar panels rated between 800 and 1,500 watts on balconies or near windows. This setup would allow residents to generate supplementary electricity to cover their personal household needs.

Yakovenko added that the balcony generation model could eventually be expanded across millions of Ukrainian apartments, creating a nationwide network of decentralized energy generation.

Home Storage and System Specifications

The proposed system integrates solar panels with specialized home energy storage units, including the EcoFlow PowerStream. The PowerStream unit accumulates electrical energy and works alongside solar panels, transforming standard residential apartments into localized power stations.

Yakovenko reported that a PowerStream system featuring a storage capacity of five kilowatt-hours is scheduled to arrive in Ukraine within the coming weeks. The estimated starting price for the system will be 80,000 Ukrainian hryvnias.

According to Yakovenko's calculations, a household operating the five kilowatt-hour system properly could recoup its initial purchase cost in approximately three years, with the exact payback period depending on local electricity tariffs.

Understanding Distributed Generation and Balcony Solar

Distributed generation refers to an energy distribution model where electricity is produced locally at multiple small-scale sites near the consumer, rather than centrally at large power plants. Balcony solar installations use compact photovoltaic panels mounted on external walls or balcony railings, connected directly to battery storage units or indoor electrical circuits.

By storing excess power during peak generation hours, home energy storage systems allow urban households to maintain independent power supplies during grid fluctuations and reduce overall demand on central energy infrastructure.

Role of EcoFlow and DroneUA

DroneUA is a Ukrainian technology company that serves as the exclusive representative for EcoFlow in Ukraine. The company specializes in distributing robotics, unmanned aerial systems, and renewable energy storage solutions across consumer and industrial sectors.

EcoFlow is an international manufacturer of portable power stations, solar panels, and smart home energy ecosystems. Its products range from compact mobile power banks to modular residential energy storage systems designed for off-grid and backup power generation.

Related Hardware Market Developments

The upcoming balcony system launch comes alongside broader additions to EcoFlow's product line. The manufacturer recently released its Rapid series of power banks, which feature integrated charging cables and support power output of up to 45 watts.

Other consumer technology manufacturers are also expanding high-capacity charging options. In 2025, Chinese electronics firm Xiaomi released a 140-watt universal charging station featuring eight separate charging ports, priced at 42 dollars.

The arrival of the five kilowatt-hour PowerStream system in Ukraine over the coming weeks will mark the next step in bringing balcony solar generation to apartment residents across the country.
