The president of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has traveled on a military plane to the Maldives, as confirmed by the air authorities and the Sri Lankan prime minister’s office, although it is unknown where he was transferred shortly after in the middle of a strong cordon police, according to information from airport officials collected by the media

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesingue, Acting President, has declared the state of emergency and has imposed immediate curfew in the province of the capital.

Rajapaksa, fled her official residence last Saturday before being assaulted by thousands of desperate people due to the crisis in the country and that has left Sri Lanka immersed in a serious economic and institutional situation.

Despite the fact that, after the popular revolt, Rajaoaksa announced that he would resign from his post, making use of the presidential powers that he still enjoys, “at the request of the Government, with the approval of the Ministry of Defense, and under the rules and regulations of Immigration and Emigration, a plane belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force has been assigned to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his wife and two other security personnel,” the Air Force said.

Several members of the Rajapaksa family, who held high positions in the government, have also tried to leave the country since the riots.

Rajapaksa’s resignation is expected to take place on Wednesday. Sri Lanka’s political parties agreed on Monday to appoint a new interim president on July 20 to end the power vacuum left by Rajapaksa’s departure.
