Fuels and fresh food shoot up the CPI for June to 10.2%


This is its highest level since April 1985. Core inflation stood at 5.5%, the highest rate since August 1993. In the CAV, the CPI has risen to 9.6%, while Navarra repeats the state average of 10.2%.

The inflation was shot in June 10.2% in annual rate, thus reaching its highest level since April 1985, as confirmed on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). In Euskadiprices have risen in June by 1.8%, which is 9.6% more than in June 2021, with which the accumulated inflation so far this year stands at 5.7%, and in Navarreinflation in June was 10.2%, the same as the State average.

This year-on-year increase in prices, one and a half points higher than in May (8.7%), has been driven mainly by higher prices for fuels Y fresh food.

Eliminated from the shopping basket the most volatile elements (fresh food and energy), the Underlying inflation stood at 5.5%, the highest rate since August 1993.

State-level data

In this context, and at the level of the entire Spanish State, without taking into account the latest tax variations, the CPI would have registered a year-on-year increase of 11.1% in June, almost one point more than the general CPI. Specifically, the price of electricity rose by 33.4% in June and, without taking into account the latest variations in taxes on electricity, the increase would be 52.7%, almost twenty points more.

Transportation was the group that pushed inflation the most in June, with an increase in prices of 19.2%, more than four points higher than in May, due to higher fuel and lubricant prices. It was closely followed by Food and non-alcoholic beverages, with a rise of 12.9%, almost two points higher than the previous month and the highest since the historical series began, in 1994.

In June, prices rose 1.9%, compared to 0.8% in May; This is the highest rate in a month of June since 1977.

Euskadi, by provinces

In the Basque Country, by province, Álava registered an interannual CPI of 9.8%, while in Bizkaia it was 10%, and in Gipuzkoa 8.9%.

Compared to the month of May, the CPI has been raised by 1.8% in Álava, 1.9% in Bizkaia and 1.7% in Gipuzkoa.

With these data, inflation so far this year has increased by 5.7% in Álava, 6% in Bizkaia and 5.4% in Gipuzkoa.

The most inflationary sector in the CAV in June was Transport, with an increase of 4.8%, followed by Housing (3.3%) and Food and non-alcoholic beverages (2%).
