The president of Guatemala, Alexander Giammatteilamented this Tuesday the death of 50 immigrants crowded in a truck found on the outskirts of San Antonio (Texas, USA), and made a call to toughen penalties against human trafficking.
“It is inexcusable that innocent lives continue to be lost to migrant smuggling! My condolences to the families of those who died in Texas,” Giammattei, who is in Washington on a work tour focused on the immigration issue, expressed on social networks.
In the same message, the Guatemalan president considered that “it is imperative that mechanisms are found to toughen sentences” and that human trafficking “is a crime for extradition purposes.”
According to the Mexican authorities, Among the 50 deceased are at least 22 Mexicans, 7 Guatemalans and 2 Hondurans.
In addition to the dead, in the truck too 16 people were found alive who needed medical assistance.
The White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, vindicated this Tuesday the fight against human trafficking carried out by the US Government and assured that in the last two months 1,800 people have been arrested.

The area where the trailer was located is a common place where vehicles stop to unload immigrants after crossing the border clandestinely. Temperatures in San Antonio reached 40ºC this Monday.
Giammattei is in Washington for a meeting with members of the Department of Homeland Security and to attend a special meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS). (YO)
