The British Government has urged this Sunday the Northern Irish parties to form an autonomous power-sharing government as soon as possible, so that the problems in that province can be urgently addressed.
Northern Ireland Minister Brandon Lewis has called the second most voted formation in Thursday’s elections, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to nominate a candidate for deputy chief minister for the Northern Irish government to resume its activity.
The elections have given victory for the first time in history to the nationalist party Sinn Féinformer political arm of the dormant IRA, which, according to the Good Friday Agreement (1998), should head a power-sharing executive.
However, the leader of the DUP, Jeffrey Donaldson, has insisted that his formation will not enter the government until the Protocol for Northern Ireland between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
The DUP rejects the controversial protocol for the region, designed by London and Brussels to review goods arriving from Great Britain and prevent the uncontrolled entry of products into the European community market, while preventing a hard border between the two Irelands, key to the peace process.
“Jeffrey (Donaldson), the DUP and all the parties in the Stormont Assembly should come together to come back and settle the domestic issues of Northern Ireland,” the minister told the BBC.
Lewis has said that the Conservative government “does not rule out any option” on the Brexit protocol, although he has advocated finding an agreement with the EU for its modification.
At the same time, he recognized that Sinn Féin’s victory, with 27 seats out of 90is “significant”, although he recalled that the unionists are still the majority in the provincial legislature.

In the same way, he has ruled out for the moment opening a debate on a referendum for the reunification of the islandthe ultimate objective of Sinn Féin, since in his opinion the conditions for holding that consultation are not yet met.
The minister plans to meet on Monday with the leaders of the parties represented in the Northern Irish Assembly, to get the dialogue to resume government formation.
North Ireland no executive since the DUP removed Chief Minister Paul Givan and brought down the government in February in protest against the protocol.
