India put its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft under “exhaustive surveillance” on Tuesday after the accident of a 737-800 model aircraft in southern China with 132 people on board, where the chances of finding survivors are remote.
“Flight safety is a serious matter and we are closely studying the situation. In the meantime, we are focusing on improving surveillance of our (Boeing) 737 fleet,” said Director General of the Indian General Civil Aviation Council, Arun Kumar, speaking to the local news agency PTI.
To increase such security, Kumar stated that the authorities would deploy teams to monitor the flight procedures, airworthiness and operations of these aircraft.
Up to three Indian airlines – Spicejet, Vistara and Air India Express – have this model of aircraft in their fleet, which from now on will be inspected in detail.
This announcement follows the accident yesterday of China Eastern airlines flight MU5735, which crashed in the southern Chinese province of Guangxi with 132 people on board, with no survivors found during rescue efforts.
Images spread on social networks show how the aircraft plummeted at high speed, crashing in a wooded area.
After hearing the news, several Chinese airlines, including the owner of the damaged aircraft, announced that they would ground their 737-800 fleet for the time being.
In March 2019, India already closed its airspace to flights of the Boeing 737 MAX model, after the serious accidents of two planes of this type – a different model from the one that crashed today in China – in Ethiopia and Indonesia that caused the death of almost 350 people.
India lifted the ban, to which almost all countries had joined, 27 months later, in August 2021.
The last major plane crash in India took place in August 2020, when a plane skidded off the runway due to heavy rain while landing at Kozhikode airport in the south of the country and broke into two parts. leaving 16 people dead. (I)
