Pancho Piedra, the Cuencan DJ who transforms the ‘chabacano’ into music, will perform at the Estéreo Pícnic de Colombia

Live music is being the greatest of the reunions that the current presence celebrates. Recently, the lollapalooza brought together thousands of attendees Chili Y Argentina. Now the turn will be Stereo Picnic (FEP), in Colombia, which on its first day of festival will feature the participation of the Ecuadorian DJ Stone Pancho.

“I think what is going to happen is very special, because after the pandemic we realized how important these meetings are… I think people’s spirits are very high, with great expectations. So glad to be a part of this.” points out the artist from Cuenca, who looks forward to representing the country in one of the most important Latin American festivals.

“There is nothing compared to the magic of connecting with people and everything that a live show implies (…), this is everything we needed, after having had these hard times”, says the DJ.

The musical experimentation Magician will be taken to the Bogota stages on the first day of the festival (March 25), the date on which the American rock band will also participate Foo Fighters.

Turn the ‘auspicious’ into music

His music is characterized by merging tapes, records and cables with elements of daily life, such as popular phrases, political speeches, market recordings or radio voices. “When I make music I like to go a bit more extravagant and weird, looking for different things to generate a kind of alchemy, where you transform the elements and turn them into something new”, indicates.

“I always try to take those elements even a little folkloric from our culture”Add.

His inspiration or influence comes from everywhere, from national music, pop, rock, classical music, psychedelic music and even art. “Everything in life nourishes you, from the moment you get up you have visual elements, from your food, from what they tell you. So I think that everything nurtures your taste for sounds”, manifest.

He says that at 10 years of age he was already manipulating equipment and programming music in a collection of 3,000 records on his father’s radio station. “I come from a family dedicated to the world of radio, I am the fourth generation to do so. I was practically born on a radio”, says Pancho Piedra, who already has a 20-year career.

He is the creator of the Tripy Tripy Fest in Cuenca. His first productions were released on the Californian label Adjunct Audio. He has collaborated with musicians such as Alex Arnout, Nicola Cruz and Pier Bucci.

His music has been published on world-class labels such as Multi Culti, Bar 25, Air Texture, Shika Shika and Bassy Tropikalne.

Electronic music scene in Ecuador

He considers that Ecuador is in a great moment when it comes to electronic music. “We have very great ambassadors like Nicola Cruz who represents the country around the world.”, he points out.

“We are in a super-wide era in the number of DJs and genres that are played, there are many new young people who are getting into music production. Young people are inspired by what is happening around the world…” points.

EFF Dates

The FEP returns after three years and will be held on March 25, 26 and 27 in Bogotá. Among the artists who will be part of this musical encounter are Martin Garrix, J Balvin, C. Tangana, Nikki Nicole, LP, among others. (I)
