The leaders of France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy, the quintet that closely follows the situation in Ukraine, reaffirmed this Monday in a telematic meeting his willingness to keep up the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to put an end to the war in Ukraine.
In that conversation, according to the Elysee, they talked about the humanitarian situation in the Ukrainian city of Mariúpol, which they called “critical”, and about the urgency of obtaining unhindered access for humanitarian aid.
“They reiterated their demand for an immediate ceasefire and a withdrawal of Russian troops and reaffirmed their determination to increase their support for Ukraine and to maintain pressure on Russia,” the French authorities said.
The joint objective, according to them, is that Russia agrees to both the ceasefire and to advance the ongoing negotiations with Ukraine.
The remote meeting was attended by the French president, Emmanuel Macron; the heads of government of Germany, Olaf Scholz; the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, and Italy, Mario Draghi, and the American president, Joe Biden, who this week he begins a tour of Europe that will take him to Brussels and Poland.
“Coordination between European partners and allies regarding the war is constant”, added the French Presidency in its summary of that conversation, in which the preparation of the extraordinary NATO and G7 summits that will take place on Thursday in Brussels on the sidelines of the European Council.
