The foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) have reached an agreement to finance with another 500 million euros military material for Ukraineso that the EU will raise its contribution for lethal and non-lethal aid to the Ukrainians to a total of 1,000 million euros.
The high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, announced at a press conference after the Council of Community Ministers the “political agreement” to use another 500 million euros from the European Fund in Support of Peace (FEAP) to Ukraine, a decision to be formalized later.
The Spanish politician explained that the ministers have analyzed the situation in Ukraine and have agreed to continue making decisions. “The conclusions have been very clear. All the Member States are extraordinarily united in support of Ukraine,” said Josep Borrell, who has insisted that the Russian forces are committing “war crimes” and “violations of international law” with its invasion.
Thus, it has been pointed out that the EU will continue to provide financial and humanitarian support to the Ukrainian armed forces. Although the Council was not expected to take a legal decision today on the extension of the use of FEAP for Ukraine, at a political level the measure was prepared and no Member State questioned the need to continue providing that country with weapons and military supplies, according to community sources. .
It is expected that the measure can be specified at the legal level when the German Parliament has completed the internal legislative procedure on it, according to various sources. The EU has already validated almost all of the 500 million euros it has allocated to finance lethal and non-lethal military equipment so that Ukraine can defend itself against Russian invaders.
The Twenty-seven have shortened the use of 450 million euros for lethal aid and 50 million euros for defensive material from the FEAP, which is nourished by contributions from the Member States outside the community budget.
