An elderly survivor of several Nazi concentration camps dies in a bombing in Ukraine

Boris Romantschenkoa survivor of several Nazi concentration camps, has died from the Russian bombardment of the building where he lived in Kharkov, in Ukraine. He lived alone and was sick, which prevented him from leaving the apartment, located on the eighth floor, without help.

his passing the granddaughter confirmed to German Foundation of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials, two of Nazi Germany’s concentration camps. Romantschenko, 96 years old, was deported to Germany in 1942, when he was only 16 years old, and in that country he went through up to four concentration centers.

“According to what we have learned from his relatives, our friend Boris Romanchenko, who survived the Buchenwald, Peenemünde, Dora and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, died last Friday in a bomb attack on his apartment building in Kharkov. We are deeply shocked”, they have explained from the foundation.

They also emphasize that “the horrible death of Boris Romantschenko shows to what extent the war in Ukraine is a threat to concentration camp survivors“. A war that ironically Russia continues to define as “special operation” to “denazify” Ukraine.

As vice president of the Buchenwald-Dora International Committee, Romantschenko developed an “intense campaign” for the memory of Nazi crimes.
