The entrance of Russian ships to the ports of some Baltic countries will soon become unavailable. As Minister of Transport of Latvia Talis Linkaits stated on TV3 air, such a decision can be made by the Latvian authorities.
The initiative is already being prepared by the Latvian government, Linkaits added. “Ships under the Russian flag still call at Latvian ports, which, in my opinion, is unacceptable,” he explained.
Denmark also took a solidary position. According to Foreign Minister of the kingdom Yeppe Kufud, the country is considering closing seaports for ships from Russia and Belarus and is generally ready to support the most stringent EU sanctions against these countries.
Recall that restrictions against Russia are introduced in connection with the events in Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
