Russia says it has medicine reserves for between three months and a year

Russia has reserves of most vital medicines for between three months and a yearElena Denísova, deputy director of the country’s Department of Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry, affirmed today.

“We have monitored the majority of vital and important medicine producers: for a large number of INN (international nonproprietary name or generic name of medicine or drug) we have reservations from three months to a year”, Denísova said, quoted by the Interfax agency, in an appearance in the Legislative.

He admitted that in recent weeks both the demand and the prices of medicines have increased.

“Part of the raw material from abroad has been blocked from us. We are looking for alternative suppliers: India, China, but prices have begun to increase and the value of foreign currency is also increasing,” said the official.

He added that in addition to raw materials for medicines, Russia imports excipients, packaging supplies and standards for quality control.

“We are working to see how to level the situation in the domestic markets in the short and medium term,” said Denisova.

For his part, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko noted that pharmaceutical companies report that supplies have not been interrupted.

He admitted that in the last three weeks there has been an excessive demand for medicines, which he attributed to the spread of “fake news” and the circulation of unverified information.

On the 14th, the German pharmaceutical firm Bayer and the American Pfizer announced the suspension of their investments in Russia, although they stressed that they will continue to supply the country for ethical reasons.

Pfizer also declared that it will allocate the profits obtained from the sale of its medicines in Russia to humanitarian aid for the citizens of Ukraine, where since February 24 the Russian Army has carried out a “special military operation” with the purpose of what the Government of Moscow calls “demilitarize and denazify” the neighboring country.
