The G20 Health and Economic Ministers today pledged to vaccinate 70% of the world’s population by mid-2022 as a way to try to control the coronavirus pandemic and drive a lasting economic recovery.

This was stated in a final statement, in which they highlighted the importance of “advancing towards the global goals of vaccinating at least 40% of the population in all countries by the end of 2021 and at 70% by mid-2022“and” boost the supply of vaccines and essential medical supplies and products in developing countries, as well as eliminate supply and financing constraints. “

The Italian Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, has explained in statements to the media that “there has been a strong and joint commitment of the Ministers of Economy and Health to strengthen the investments in the healthcare sector“.

“The lesson of COVID-19 tells us that we must invest more courageously in the health services of our countries. Health can no longer be considered a cost, but an investment in the quality of people,” he added.

The ministers of Economy and Health met today in Rome, in the first joint meeting under the Italian presidency of the G20, to demonstrate that both matters are and must continue to be closely related to face future health emergencies, penalizing as little as possible to economies.

They have done so on the eve of the great summit of G20 leaders that will be held between tomorrow and until Sunday, and which will be attended, among others, by the president of the United States, Joe Biden, from Argentina, Alberto Fernández, from Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, from France, Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to succeed her, Olaf Scholz.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has also traveled to the Italian capital, since Spain is a permanent guest country of the G20.

Workgroup

The G20 Health and Economy has also decided to create a joint working group that will seek to improve global dialogue and cooperation on the management of future health emergencies and the effective administration of resources.

The intention is for it to meet at the end of 2021 to agree on a roadmap and to be assisted by a secretariat located at the World Health Organization (WHO), with the support of the World Bank.
