The characters that become popular in social networks also do politics and this is demonstrated by the last parliamentary election in Colombia.
Colombian youtuber Jota Pe Hernández became the third most voted candidate for the Senate on Sunday with a speech against the government and in favor of social movements, according to official data.
With 99.41% of the votes counted, the 30-year-old led the vote of the Alianza Verde Coalition and Centro Esperanza in which he obtained almost 190,000 votes, even more than big names in national politics, such as the former peace negotiator Humberto de la Calle or Senator Angélica Lozano, his party colleagues.
Jota Pe, whose first name is Jonathan Ferley Pulido Hernández, is a “political digital content creator”, as well as a “political activist and leader in social networks”, as defined by his own formation, and has more than 1.16 million of followers on YouTube and more than 65,600 on Instagram.
Despite having this great presence on the networks, the new senator was a surprise during the count, when many began to wonder who was this candidate who collected so many votes, but who had not been heard of.

In front of him, as the most voted at the national level, were the elected senators Miguel Uribe, who obtained 223,167 votes, and María Fernanda Cabal, with 196,865 votes, two of the highest representatives of the Uribista Democratic Center party.
Colombia held legislative elections this Sunday in which it renewed the composition of Congress, in addition to electing, for the first time, the special constituencies for peace and the presidential candidates of three coalitions.
The leftist Historical Pact, led by Gustavo Petro, favorite to win the presidency, became the most voted party for the Senate and the second in the House of Representatives, while the big loser was the Democratic Center, until now the main country’s political force.
“After the strike, many of us realized that the Colombian people are fighting alone against a dictatorial regime: the Uribista regime. For this reason, all of us who yearn for change, despite the differences, must unite,” defends the “youtuber” .
In his accounts, he highlights the support for social movements and protests and also criticizes the government of President Iván Duque.
“I am the senator of the people,” Pulido celebrated after learning of the result of the vote in a video on YouTube, where he addressed the new congressmen to ask them to “come to legislate honestly.”
At the same time, he warned “the congressmen from the machinery who managed to get to Congress thanks to their millions (of pesos), not to sign up because I am not going to allow them to steal what belongs to the people,” since, according to defined himself, he is “a humble man, from a very poor family (which) they robbed for many years”.
Jota Pe is not the only famous candidate or with a peculiar profession who was elected yesterday since, for example, the presenter and actor Agmet Escaf, from the Historical Pact, also won a seat in the Chamber. (I)
