YouTube blocks official Russian media channels around the world

The online video platform YouTube (owned by Google) blocked this Friday the channels of Russian official media that receive funds from the Government, considering that they violate their use policies in relation to not minimizing violent events such as the war in Ukraine.

In a statement, YouTube spokesman Farshad Shadloo explained that the video portal’s internal rules prohibit content that “deny, downplay, or trivialize well-documented violent events”.

In compliance with this rule, the platform has been removing content that does not comply with the regulations since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has now also blocked with immediate effect and throughout the world the channels of official Russian media that repeatedly minimize violence in Ukraine.

A few hours before YouTube’s announcement, Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, announced that, temporarily due to the war in Ukraine, it allows users to bypass its rules of use and send messages that would normally be prohibited such as “death to the russian invader”.

In a statement, company spokesman Andy Stone explained that the exceptions are allowed on a temporary basis due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and do not include death threats.credible” against Russian civilians.

However, Meta does allow calls for the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, issued from Ukraine, Poland and Russia itself.

In response, Russia’s telecoms regulator Roskomnadzor blocked Instagram in the country on Friday at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office, while Facebook has already been blocked since last week.
