Michelle Bachelet calls for a COP26 “without empty speeches or broken promises”

“We need laws to be passed, programs launched and investments made without delay,” he said.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, today asked the international community to take seriously the Climate Change Summit that begins this week in Glasgow (United Kingdom), where “empty speeches must be left behind and the broken promises ”.

“We need laws to be passed, programs launched and investments made without delay, since only urgent action can mitigate or avoid disasters with a huge and lethal impact on us, our children and our grandchildren,” Bachelet said in a statement. .

States attending the summit must meet their current climate financing commitments and even increase them, said the former Chilean president.

“Those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including disadvantaged and marginalized communities, must be the first recipients of these resources,” he added.

The high commissioner recalled that the United Nations Human Rights Council recently approved a historic resolution that recognizes the right of everyone to live in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

“It is time to switch to a sustainable, carbon-neutral economy and stop subsidizing activities that damage our only home, so we need business models that are respectful with the environment and thus protect human rights,” he added.

“Without a healthy planet to live on, there will be no human rights and, if we continue as we are, there might even be no humans,” warned Bachelet. (I)
