Los Ríos cemeteries are preparing to receive hundreds of visitors for the Day of the Dead, which is commemorated every November 2.

The Babahoyo General Cemetery will be open to the public on November 1 and 2 from 08:00 to 17:00. Narcisa Vera, administrator of this space, said that for the prevention and safety of visitors, only five people per family will be allowed through, for a period of 15 to 30 minutes. He also indicated that food can no longer be shared, as was done in previous years, to avoid crowds.

The official added that at least 20 merchants will be allowed to work on the outside of the cemetery.

“This year, due to the drop in positive cases of coronavirus in the population, the Technical Board of Health 2 authorized that in an organized way and with restricted hours the entry of the relatives is allowed to visit the graves of their deceased, the resolutions are similar to those that were established for Father’s Day and the citizens collaborated a lot, we now expect the same response this holiday, ”said Vera.

Minors will not be able to enter the cemetery, the official stressed.

Gauges and distancing

In Quevedo, representatives of the local Emergency Operations Committee (COE) announced the resolutions determined for this holiday regarding access to the four public cemeteries in the city.

It was established that the capacity in the cemeteries will be 75% and they will be open to the public until 22:00. The presence of informal vendors outside in cemeteries was also authorized, after coordinating the ordering actions of the merchants so that the distancing and biosecurity protocol is respected.

Likewise, the local COE requested that a Red Cross tent be installed outside the General Cemetery, located in the 24 de Mayo parish, to assist users in the event of an emergency.

The Municipality of Vinces announced that the General Cemetery will remain open to the public from 08:00 to 18:00. For a few days, workers from the town hall have been making adjustments and cleaning the internal and external parts of the cemetery.

In the other cantons, the relatives will have free access to the cemeteries, respecting the maximum capacity of 75% of the total capacity

María Castro, a flower and candle merchant in Quevedo, was optimistic about the authorization of the local COE for informal vendors to work outside the cemetery on this holiday, in which they receive a high flow of visitors.

“How good that we are starting to reactivate ourselves economically, I have good expectations, a lot of people always go to the Quevedo cemetery during this date and we have to take advantage of working,” said the seller. (I)
