Davos World Economic Forum suspends relations with Russia

The World Economic Forum (WEF), which will be held in Davos (Switzerland) from May 22 to 26, decided to suspend its relations with Russia and will not maintain any links with persons or entities subject to sanctions, as reported on Wednesday.

Following its condemnation of Russia’s ongoing attack on Ukraine, the Forum is complying with evolving international sanctions”, the organizers of the event known as the Davos Forum said in an email, confirming information from the US website Politico.

Accordingly, the Forum suspends all its relations with Russian entities and will not engage with any sanctioned person or institution.”, add the organizers, “even” for the annual summit, they say.

Every year the forum brings together the political, economic and diplomatic elite in Davos, an elegant ski resort in the Alps.

Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev have spoken five times in Davos since 2007, the US media listed, recalling that the current Russian president was also invited in 2015 after the invasion of Crimea, but finally decided not to attend.

The founder of the forum, Klaus Schwab, then stated that he hoped the event would serve to “build bridges” between the various parties to the emerging conflict in Ukraine.

In 2021, Putin intervened in Davos virtually, when the forum had been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and replaced by a virtual edition.

He referred in particular to the extension of the New Start agreement to limit the nuclear arsenals of Russia and the United States, and welcomed the extension of the treaty after a last-minute agreement.
