Grandmaster from Russia Romanov changed sports citizenship and will play for Norway
Russian chess player Evgeny Romanov decided to change sports citizenship. It is reported by VG.
The 33-year-old grandmaster will represent Norway in the competition. Romanov noted that the change of sports citizenship was planned. He added that he is not too connected with Russian chess and has been cooperating with Norwegian coaches for a long time.
“Now those who represent Russia may have difficulties. I took such a step to continue my career, ”summed up Romanov. The grandmaster refrained from answering the question as to whether this move is an attempt to distance himself from what is happening between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed that his transfer to the Norwegian flag is not connected with the political situation.
“I have been closely associated with Norwegian chess since 2013. I have been living in this country for many years, I have friends and students here. It is an honor for me to represent Norway at international competitions,” concluded Romanov.
