Expressing an opinion against the war can be punished with up to 15 years in prison. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalni has called on the country’s population to ignore the bans and take to the streets to demand an end to the invasion.
At least 4510 people have been arrested in the demonstrations called on Sunday in the main Russian cities against the invasion of Ukraine, as reported by the civil rights group OVD-Info.
A Police spokesman has confirmed 1,700 detainees in Moscow alone in a concentration of some 2,500 people in a “unauthorized demonstration”. Another 750 people have been arrested in a smaller demonstration of about 1,500 people in the city of Saint Petersburg, according to Russian news agencies.
At least 96 people have been detained in Novosibirsk, 18 in Irkutsk and 15 in Vladivostok and Khabarovsk, according to a partial balance from the OVD-Info organization.
In Yekaterinburg during the rally the cops have been used with violence and they have beaten one of the protesters who fell to the ground with batons, according to videos broadcast on social networks. In total, calls have been counted against the war in 29 Russian cities.
OVD-Info has counted 12,979 people detained in protests against the war since the beginning of the invasion, on February 24.
