The Russian opponent Aleksei Navalni, currently imprisoned, today called on his compatriots to take to the streets against the invasion of Ukraine ordered by President Vladimir Putin, whom he described as a “mad tsar.” “Russia wants to be a nation of peace. Unfortunately, few people would call us that now. But at least let’s not become a country of frightened and silent people, of cowards who they pretend not to notice the war against Ukraine unleashed by our obviously crazy czar“, assures Navalni from his Twitter account.
He stressed that “Putin is not Russia. And if there is something in Russia right now that one can be more proud of, it is those 6,824 people who were arrested because -spontaneously- took to the streets with banners saying ‘No to war’“. Navalni was referring to the thousands of people who have been arrested these days in various Russian cities for demonstrating against the war.
“I can’t, I don’t want to and I will not stay silent seeing how the pseudo-historical nonsense about the events of 100 years ago has become an excuse for the Russians to kill the Ukrainians and the Ukrainians to kill the Russians to defend themselves,” continues the main opponent of the Putin regime.
“It’s the third decade of the 21st century and we’re seeing news about people being burned in tanks and houses being bombed. We’re seeing real threats of starting a nuclear war on our televisions,” he added. He recalls that he is imprisoned and cannot attend any protest but reiterates his call to citizens to demonstrate daily against the invasion of Ukraine: “We can not wait any longer. Wherever you are, in Russia, Belarus or on the other side of the planet, come to the main square of your city every day.”
“We must, gritting our teeth and overcoming fear, go out and demand an end to the war. Each person arrested must be replaced by two newcomers” to the protests. Navalni was poisoned in August 2020 with a Russian-made chemical weapon (Novichok) and accuses the Russian secret services of the assassination attempt. After returning to Russia in January 2021 after several months of convalescence in Germany , was arrested, imprisoned and sentenced to two and a half years in prison, and since then the West has insistently demanded his release.He is currently being tried again for new accusations of corruption that the West and some NGOs consider to be merely political.
