UN Secretary says it is urgent to reinvent global governance and cooperation

The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, defended today that the current challenges, such as the “cruel” conflicts and geopolitical tensions that plague the worldshow that it is “urgent” to reinvent governance and cooperation at the global level.

In a video message to thank the University of Coimbra Prize awarded to him by this Portuguese institution, Guterres warned that this reinvention is necessary so that “common aspirations for peace, sustainable development, human rights and dignity for all” remain within reach.

The Secretary General of the UN considered that at this moment the world faces “an unprecedented combination of enormous challenges”such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis or rising inequalities.

Without making a direct mention of the war that has just broken out in Ukraine, Guterres pointed out that “the world is plagued by cruel conflicts and accentuated geopolitical tensions.”

“Millions of people are forced to leave their homes, mistrust between world powers reaches its climax and trust between people and institutions deteriorates. The truth is in danger,” said the Portuguese politician, who also warned about the theories of conspiracy and disinformation.

Guterres took the opportunity to highlight the report Our common agenda launched by the UN, which aims to contribute to the “search for solutions” to contribute to current challengeswith the “full” participation of civil society, the private sector, local authorities and academia.

“It is a report that seeks to reinforce the 2030 agenda, with a view to effectively improving people’s lives, placing future generations at the center of our efforts,” defended the secretary general, who is therefore going to convene for September a summit in New York on transforming education.

The University of Coimbra Award annually distinguishes a Portuguese personality in the areas of culture, economy, management or science and innovation.

Guterres, who was Prime Minister of Portugal (1995-2002) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015), has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Coimbra since 2016. (I)
