A second convoy escorted by the National Police, with Spanish citizens evacuated from Ukraine, and in which the Spanish ambassador to Ukraine also travels, Silvia Corteshas crossed this morning at 3:30 am (local time) the border with poland.
This second convoy is added to the first who crossed the border this Saturday with 40 civilians. The members of the two convoys, escorted by the National Policeare already in Krakow, where in the next few hours they will board a plane that will repatriate them to Spain, sources from the Ministry of the Interior have informed Europa Press.
The same sources indicate that a group of GEO will remain on the border between Poland and Ukraine to attend in case more Spaniards need help.
In the ‘Prussia operation’, the National Police is guaranteeing the security of the two convoys who have left the Embassy of Spain in Kiev to evacuate consular staff and Spanish citizens.
The embassy already had a security team from the National Police that was reinforced last week with a group from GEO. The policemen were also in charge of physically securing the building of the Spanish embassy after the departure of the second convoy.
In addition, the agents lowered the national flag of the headquarters, which they will guard until Spain. Along with the security tasks, the agents are attending to the needs of the evacuees (water, food and sanitation).
The departure of the ambassador to Ukraine, Silvia Cortés, along with a hundred Spaniards who were still in Kiev, was announced last Friday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares. He indicated, in this regard, that Cortés, together with what remained of the Embassy staff after having been reduced to the essential minimum, were leaving in a convoy for Poland.
Last Tuesday another one left with another 50 Spaniards, so there would already be around a hundred left in Ukraine, mainly double nationals and deeply rooted people who had already made it known that they would not leave the country. To all of them, Foreign Affairs has recommended limit your movements as much as possible and remain in a safe place, in constant contact with the Spanish authorities.
