The third-place play-off in Asia’s World Cup qualifiers will be played in Qatar on June 7, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Friday, with the winner of that clash taking place on June 13 or 14. June for a place in the Cup against the fifth of Conmebol in the same venue.
The AFC said the date and venue have been chosen for “ensure that the two fledgling Asian teams receive optimal support in their preparation.”
Iran and South Korea have secured automatic qualification for the World Cup in Group A, while the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Lebanon are fighting for third place and one of the playoff spots.
Saudi Arabia currently leads Group B by a point from Japan, with Australia sitting in third place.
Brazil and Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup in the South American qualifier, while Ecuador is about to achieve it when there are two dates left for the end of the tournament. Further back in the table appear Uruguay, Peru, Chile and Colombia.
The first four from South America get a direct ticket to the World Cup, while the fifth will play the continental playoff.
