Pope Francis will not preside at Mass on Ash Wednesday on March 2 and has canceled a trip to Florence (north) this Sunday due to a knee problem, the Holy See confirmed today.
The pontiff suffers from acute knee pain, that is, rheumatic knee pain, and the doctor has prescribed a period of “greater rest for the leg,” according to a statement.
For this reason, he will not be able to celebrate the rites of Ash Wednesday, which this year, after the pandemic, were going to feature again the traditional procession from the Roman church of San Anselmo to the nearby basilica of Santa Sabina, on the hill of the Aventine.
And he will not be able to travel to Florence, where he planned to go next Sunday for a meeting of bishops and mayors of the Mediterranean.
Francisco drags a pain in the knee since recent times that forces him to walk more slowly. At a hearing in late January he admitted it: “I still have the pain in my knee, don’t be offended if I greet you sitting down,” he said.
“I have been told that it only happens to the old, so I don’t know why it has happened to me,” Francis had joked days before before the faithful of the general audience.
Francisco has been suffering from sciatica attacks for a long time, although it had been a long time since they prevented him from carrying out his normal activity.
The 85-year-old Argentine pope was hospitalized for ten days last July at the Gemelli hospital in Rome after undergoing a colon operation for “symptomatic diverticular stenosis.” (I)
