Vladimir Putin is behaving ‘like the Nazis’, EU spokesman accuses

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, is behaving in Ukraine “like the Nazis” and is on the verge of committing genocide, accused a spokesman for the European Commission, the Slovakian Peter Stano, on Friday.

The Russian president talks about “the prevention of a genocide, which makes no sense, because he is committing one or is about to commit it. He talks about ‘de-Nazifying’ Ukraine, but he behaves like Nazis,” the spokesperson said.

Putin had justified the military offensive against targets in Ukraine with the need to eliminate Nazi elements in that country, who were carrying out a genocide against the Russian-speaking population.

Stano said Friday that it was difficult to know the true goals of Putin and the military offensive, but that the real effects were “inhumane.”

Putin, the spokesman said, “wants to seize Ukraine’s independence. He wants to cause harm and suffering to the Ukrainians. This is inhumane. It is not civilized, it does not correspond to the Europe of the 21st century”.

EU leaders politically approved on Thursday a heavy package of sanctions against the financial, transport and energy sectors, in addition to restrictions on the export of technology and the granting of visas.

However, the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, publicly called for heavier sanctions against Russia, and this Friday the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, indicated that more measures were being prepared “urgently”. (I)
