British police open investigation into Prince Charles foundation

London police announced Wednesday that they have opened an investigation into alleged donations to the foundation of Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, supposedly in exchange for honorary titles.

“This decision is a consequence of the analysis of a letter from September 2021. It is related to press information about alleged offers of help to guarantee honors and (British) citizenship for a Saudi citizen,” Scotland Yard explained in a statement, specifying that no one was arrested.

The researchers contactedpeople suspected of having relevant information” and with the Prince’s Foundation, which “provided a series of documents”.

This scandal, which came to light last year, had affected the heir to the throne.

His former valet, Michael Fawcett, is suspected of using his influence to help Saudi businessman Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz, a generous donor to charities linked to the British monarchy, win an award.

According to the newspaper Sunday TimesMahfouz, 51, was named Commander of the British Empire by Prince Charles in a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace in November 2016, an event that was not published in the official list of royal engagements.

Receiving this distinction served to support the Saudi’s application for British citizenship, according to the newspaper.

Mahfouz, who denies any wrongdoing, reportedly contributed large sums of money to restoration projects. Fawcett resigned in November 2021.

On the other hand, the press revealed that Prince Charles’s foundation had accepted hundreds of thousands of euros from a Russian donor, which led to an investigation by the independent body that regulates charities in Scotland. The foundation’s president, Douglas Connell, resigned but denied wrongdoing. (I)
