Government of Canada confronts “illegal blockades” against restrictions

Trudeau has convened the Incident Response Group to try to defuse the so-called Freedom Convoy protests, which “threaten commerce, jobs, the economy and our communities.”

The Government of Canada has convened the crisis cabinet to deal with “the illegal blocks“that are taking place throughout the country in the context of the protests of the Liberty Convoy.

“The first Minister Justin Trudeau today convened the Incident Response Group on the illegal blockades taking place across the country that threaten trade, jobs, the economy and our communities,” he said in a statement.

The authorities are trying to restore access to the Ambassador Bridge, which links the states of Toronto (Canada) and Michigan (United States), as well as other ports of entry, defined by the Government as “vital commercial corridors and in which illegal blockades they’re doing real damage to jobs and our economies on both sides of the border.”

Goods traded between Canada and the United States move by road, and the blockage of major arteries has put major supply chains at risk.

Protests and blockades by the anti-vaccine movement and people opposed to the restrictive measures of the pandemic have been blocking the roads for almost two weeks, especially in Ottawa. The tension between the demonstrators, the neighbors and the authorities is increasingly palpable.

From the United States, the White House has also called for order and has offered its help to the Government of Canada.

No convoys in Europe

In several European cities, the Freedom Convoy against health restrictions is not authorized. The Belgian Minister of the Interior, Annelies Verlinden and the Brussels authorities have announced the implementation of means to avoid the blockade, on February 14.

Brussels and also Ghent, where the march was scheduled for this Saturday, thus join other European cities, such as Paris and Vienna, which have announced prohibitions in the same direction throughout the day.
