The president of Peru, the leftist Pedro Castillo, appointed this Tuesday a new ministerial cabinet, the fourth since he came to power six months ago, which will be headed by the lawyer Aníbal Torres to replace a questioned prime minister who barely lasted three days. in charge.
“Yes, I swear,” declared the new prime minister when he was sworn in by Castillo before a crucifix, in a brief ceremony at the Government Palace in Lima.
Torres, 79, was the head of the Ministry of Justice since the beginning of the current government, on July 28.
This new cabinet of 19 members is the fourth that Castillo has been sworn in in its six months, which have been characterized by its own setbacks and internal struggles in the government, as well as attacks from the radical right, which tried to open an impeachment trial, dismissed in December by Congress.
A week ago, Castillo appointed his third cabinet after the surprise resignation of Prime Minister Mirtha Vásquez due to disagreements over police promotions.
In his place, the president appointed the lawyer and parliamentarian Héctor Valer Pinto, who was left on the tightrope after the Lima media published that his wife and his university daughter denounced him in 2016 for alleged family violence.
Three days later, Castillo announced that he was going to “recompose” the cabinet again, which marked the departure of the questioned Valer. (I)
