Nicaragua resumes trials against opponents of Daniel Ortega, relatives of prisoners ask to annul lawsuits

The Nicaraguan Prosecutor’s Office announced the reopening of trials against 46 opponents of the Daniel Ortega government, including seven former presidential candidates.

A group of relatives of people considered “political prisoners” in Nicaragua demanded on Monday the government of President Daniel Ortega to annul the trials against the imprisoned opposition leaders, scheduled to begin tomorrow, February 1.

The Nicaraguan Prosecutor’s Office announced the reopening of trials against 46 opponents of the government of Daniel Ortega, including seven former candidates for the presidency, imprisoned for charges such as “undermining national integrity” and money laundering.

As of February 1, “the oral and public trials of the accused who are in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ)” will be held, known as El Chipote, “and of those who are under house arrest,” said the Prosecutor in a statement.

“All our relatives are innocent (…), what legally corresponds is that the courts decree the total annulment of all the processes from their beginning and the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, with full enjoyment of their rights. and constitutional guarantees,” the families indicated in a statement.

Hours before, the Public Ministry had announced oral and public trials against the opponents and critics of Ortega accused of crimes considered treason or money laundering.

“We join the demand for annulment of the illegal trials of political prisoners,” the opposition Blue and White National Unit, which has several of its leaders in jail, said on its social networks.

Despite the disagreement of relatives and opponents, their demand for annulment of the trials is not legal, but public, so they hope that the Nicaraguan justice system, dominated by the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), will change your decision.

Previously, the relatives of the “political prisoners” had denounced the Nicaraguan authorities for illegal arrests, accusations of false crimes, breach of due process, ill-treatment, torture, or defenselessness.

Two of the opponents considered “political prisoners” were recently found guilty under the Special Cybercrime Law, which penalizes any type of information in an electronic medium that the Government considers a threat against it.

Although different organizations maintain that there are at least 170 “political prisoners” in Nicaragua, the Public Ministry announced that as of tomorrow, Tuesday, approximately 40 who are in the cells of the General Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ) will be tried.
