The Socialists win in Portugal with a wide advantage, with almost 60% counted

The party of the current prime minister, Antonio Costa, would be close to an absolute majority. The leader of the opposition, Rui Rio, of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, centre-right), would obtain just over 31.21% of the vote.

The Socialist Party (PS) led by the current prime minister, António Costa, has won the legislative elections held today in Portugal with a large advantage, more than 43% of the votes, when the count exceeds 59%.

According to the figures published by the Ministry of Internal Administration, the PS is the clear winner of the day and could approach the absolute majority.

Opposition leader Rui Rio of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, centre-right), would obtain just over 31.21% of the votes.

These results collide with the polls released in the last days of the campaign, which came to give a technical tie between the two parties.

The far right Chega, who only had one deputy in Parliament, would be placed as the third force with more than 7.4% of the votes, while the former partners of the left who formed with the socialists the so-called “geringonça” in the government see worsening Your results.

The Left Block, third force in 2019 with almost 7%, would now fall to fifth position, with 3.2%, and the coalition of communists and greens would remain at 3.6%.

Abstention, according to the polls, would be less than the 51% registered in the 2019 elections.

The legislative elections in Portugal, an electoral advance forced by the failure of the last Socialist Budget, concluded at 9:00 p.m. in Euskal Herria with the closing of the polling stations in the Azores archipelago.
