Fauci optimistic about the possibility that omicron in the US will reach its peak in February

The main epidemiologist of the Government of U.S, Anthony Fauci, was optimistic this Sunday about the possibility that the variant of the coronavirus omicron reach its peak in the country in mid-February and that from that moment the infections begin to decline.

“I am as optimistic as can be. With this virus, you can never be overly optimistic,” Fauci said in an interview with ABC.

“But if we look at what has happened in South Africa, the UK, Israel or even here in New England, the peak is already past and infections are going down very quickly,” the epidemiologist said.

Although areas like New England and the Northeast of the United States have generally passed the peak of infections, in other parts of the country such as the Southeast and the West, cases are still increasing, but Fauci is confident that the curve will follow the same model and that in mid-February it begins to decline.

The governor of the state of New York (northeast), Kathy Hochul, announced on Friday that the positivity rate for coronavirus has stood at 9.75%, confirming the downward rate of infections, after reaching 23 a week ago. %.

“Positivity is going down and for the first time since December 20 we are back in single digits,” the governor said at a press conference held at a medical laboratory.

In this sense, he stressed that the trend of new infections has fallen by 66% in recent weeks and that on Thursday there were 28,296 new infections.
