London received Moscow’s approval for the visit of British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to Russia for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
According to a RIA Novosti source, “the head of the British Foreign Office asked for the opportunity to come to Moscow for talks with Lavrov,” and the Russian side “agreed to a visit in February.”
Meanwhile, TASS notes, Russian Ambassador to London Andrei Kelin said that the Russian Embassy in the UK had not received an official request regarding the visit of the British Minister to Moscow.
Truss was appointed British Foreign Secretary on 15 September 2021. She could become the country’s first foreign minister to visit Russia since Boris Johnson’s visit to Moscow in 2017, Interfax stresses.
Recall that back in November-December last year, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. According to the authors and experts of these publications, a sign of “invasion” is the concentration of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine. Among the likely sanctions are both the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as well as restrictions against Russian energy companies, and the shutdown of the SWIFT system of “fast” financial settlements.
